Computer Safety Checklist

  • 1. Environment
    • Clean around computer
    • Clean source of electricity (if screen flickers regularly, probably need a UPS)
    • Optimally computer should be on separate circuit with separate ground
    • Run periodic Defrags on computer (preferably scheduled)
  • 2. Antivirus and Updates
    • Antivirus program loaded
    • Antivirus set to receive automatic updates (new stuff out every day)
    • Windows Updates set to automatically load (new updates regularly)
  • 3. Backups
    • Data backed up regularly (hopefully daily)
    • Data backed up to a device other than computer (computer might crash)
    • Data stored away from physical location of computer (protect from natural disaster)
    • Data automatically stored on 3rd party site (I recommend www.filebanc.com )
    • E-mails, contact lists and favorites exported to files and backed up (almost never done)
