Save Your Data

If you are like most people, you enter your data, contacts, e-mails and much more information into your computer without a second thought to viruses, hard drive crashes or natural disasters. Most of us only worry about what is on our computer after we've either lost it or we almost lose it. Some people do make backups of their data, but if it's on the same computer as the data, are they really safe?

In 1988, I lost a mainframe computer. Not to worry, there were 5 different backups. Problem was, all of the tapes were purchased at the same time and were all defective. 125 employees were very nervous that month when they would be paid. Point is, you never know just how good your backups are until it is crunch time, which I also like to refer to as ulcer development time.

Protecting your data is crucial. A good approach is to first prevent bad things from happening to your information and second to backup your data in safe places. Sounds easy? Can be. Since 1988, I haven't lost any data on servers. Systems I've managed have ranged from 2 servers and 50 computers to 17 servers and 500 computers. The only data lost has been from individual computers when my suggestions were not followed.
